A private guide will follow a thread for an hour because you asked about it. In a city with a complicated century, that is the whole difference between a tour and a lecture.

Numbers are capped so everyone hears the guide and the group still fits through a doorway. The route is set, which on a first visit is an advantage rather than a limit.
Timed entry, and the plaques are yours to read
On a second visit, or at a site that explains itself well, the ticket is the only thing you are short of. Buy the timed slot and keep the afternoon loose.
Rome sells the Colosseum four ways. Only one puts you on the floor.
Standard entry lands you on the upper tiers. Arena access, the underground corridors and the Palatine come on separate tickets with separate release dates, and the gap in price is wider than the gap in queue.

The war years at street level
